Advanced Root Canal Treatment

A root canal becomes necessary when the inner pulp of a tooth — the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels — becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen due to deep decay, trauma, cracks, resorption, or repeated dental procedures. If left untreated, the infection can cause ongoing pain, abscess formation, swelling, or damage to the surrounding bone.

During treatment, the infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, the canals inside the roots are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed with biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. To understand root canal treatment, it helps to understand the anatomy of your tooth. Think of your tooth like a pencil. The part you see above the gums is like the eraser — that's the crown. The rest of the pencil extends below the gumline as the root. Running through the center, like the lead of the pencil, is the root canal space. This narrow channel contains tiny blood vessels and nerves, and connects to the rest of your body's blood supply at the tip of the root.

If a crack, cavity, or trauma exposes this root canal space to bacteria, the nerves and blood vessels become inflamed. Unlike other parts of your body, this blood supply is trapped in a very narrow, rigid canal surrounded by hard root structure. There is no room for swelling or additional blood flow to fight the infection, which means the tissue cannot heal on its own. Root canal treatment removes the compromised tissue, eliminates the infection, and seals the space so the tooth can remain in your mouth and continue to function normally.

If the blood supply inside your tooth becomes too inflamed, your body cannot replenish and heal that tissue, and bacteria begins to brew an infection. The inflammation stage is typically when people experience a toothache — hot and cold sensitivity, pain when biting, and throbbing. At this point, over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil or Tylenol may provide temporary relief by calming the nerves, but this is only a short-term solution.
